Chapter 26: Mutual Aid

"An hour," I said.

"I'd have called. They told us at five. I drove straight here."

I was still in my utility fleece with my headset around my neck.

I'd been up for fourteen hours.

I didn't care.

I went down two steps and took his face in both hands and kissed him.

Not a goodbye kiss.

The other kind.

He made a low sound and pulled me down onto his knee right there on my father's steps.

His hand went under the back of my fleece, flat and warm on my spine.

I bit his lip, and he held me tighter.

The kid leaned out of the truck window and whistled.

The lieutenant reached over and rolled the window up on him.

"Six weeks," I said against Morgan's mouth.

"Forty-two days."

"You counted."

"I'm a foreman. I count everything."

He kissed me once more, slower, on the corner of my mouth.

Then he stood up and set me on my feet.

Ruthann was in the doorway with Kinley on her hip.

Morgan went up and touched the top of Kinley's head with one big finger.

"Mind your mother, traffic cone."
