Chapter 29: Decree
November nineteenth was cold and bright, with frost on the courthouse steps.
I wore my good blazer.
Morgan wore a borrowed tie and his cast, which the kid had re-signed in silver marker.
Ruthann wore her parka over a church dress and brought gum for everyone.
At nine o'clock, a judge I'd never met looked over the papers on her desk.
Reece sat at the other table, alone.
No lawyer beside him.
No mother.
He'd signed everything weeks ago and hadn't changed a word.
"Ms. Callender," the judge said. "Anything you want to add?"
"No, Your Honor."
"Dr. Pelham?"
Reece stood up.
"No, Your Honor. She asked for what's fair. It's fair."
The judge signed.
It took barely a moment.
Seven years, finished with a blue pen.
"The marriage is dissolved," she said. "Good luck to you both."
I walked out into the hall.
I'd thought I would feel something big.
What I felt was light.
At ten o'clock, we sat in the back row of a criminal courtroom on the second floor.
Reece stood in front of a different judge in the same navy suit.
