Chapter 8: The First Night

He was already in bed when I came through the door between our rooms.

The lamp was low.

He lay against the pillows with the sheet at his waist and his arms bare, and he watched me cross the floor.

"I thought you'd lock it," I said.

"I thought you would."

"I never have."

"I noticed."

I stopped beside the bed in the grey nightshirt Roxie had lent me.

"Rule two is crossed out," I said. "I want to hear you say why."

"Because I've thought about your mouth for three days." His voice was low and level. "Because you stood on a stage and told two hundred strangers what you meant to do to me, and I sat there and wanted it."

"That's why."

"That's all of it, Lena."

It was the first time he had said my name.

I pulled the nightshirt over my head and let it fall.

His eyes went over me slowly, from my face down, and stayed.

"Chart that," I said.

His breath left him in a short laugh, and then it wasn't a laugh.

"Come here."

I climbed onto the bed and knelt over his hips.

His hands came up and settled on my waist, big and warm and very careful.

"Tell me what you can feel," I said.

"Your hands. Your weight." He swallowed. "Heat, mostly."

"Where?"

"Everywhere you're touching."

I bent down and kissed him.

It was slow at first, and then his hand slid to the back of my head and it wasn't.

He kissed like he had in the chapel, hard and thorough, and I felt my body answer before my mind did.

I broke away and moved my mouth along his jaw and down his throat.

He made a low sound that I felt in my own chest.

"Lena."

"Mm."

"You are going to finish me before we begin."
