Chapter 23: Season's End

Lakemont lost the national semifinal in overtime, three to two, on a deflection off a skate.

Nobody was to blame. Ty told himself that all the way back to the hotel, and it did not help.

The locker room had been silent for twenty minutes, and then Coach had said, "That was the best team I ever coached," and left.

Cullen had cried openly into a towel.

Even Brody, back on the roster since the final, had sat in the corner with his head down.

The hotel elevator went up eleven floors with Lars pressed against Ty's side.

Neither of them said anything.

In the room Lars sat on the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees.

He still had his jacket on.

"It's over," he said.

"I know."

"The season. My last game here. The last one with you on this team."

"I know, Lars."

Lars looked up.

"It's the night rule four ends," he said.

Ty sat down beside him.

"I thought you killed that rule."

"I did. I killed it Thursday." Lars turned his hands over. "But it was a good rule. It said exactly what this was. Everything was going to end the night we lost."

"We lost."

"Yes."

"Then I'll say it for you." Ty took a breath. "The terms are done. Nothing is holding us to anything. You're free. You can go to the club on Monday and be whoever you want, and I'll be fine."

Lars's mouth twitched.

"You're a terrible liar."

"I know."

"I don't want to be free." Lars's voice was rough. "I want you in my life. I'll fly you out every bye week. I'll rent a place with a second bedroom. I'll learn to cook something that isn't eggs."
