Chapter 5: Code of Conduct
By Monday morning Chantal had posted a new video, and this one had been edited by someone with a gift for lies.
It showed me at the yacht club in a green dress, holding a microphone, with a caption that said MISTRESS CRASHES WEDDING, EXTORTS CHECK.
It did not show the group chat, or Chantal's father, or anything I had said.
By nine o'clock it had half a million views, and by ten I was in the conference room on the sixth floor.
Three people sat at the table.
Tobias, at the head, in a gray shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
A man in his sixties with a silver comb-over, who had introduced himself as the finance partner and then said nothing kind.
And me.
"Our biggest client reviews the studio next month," the finance partner said. "They've seen this. They've called twice."
"I didn't extort anyone," I said.
"I'm sure that's what you tell yourself."
"I have the whole chat. I can show you what really happened. Chantal's father wrote that check himself."
"A video is what people watch. Not a chat." He turned to Tobias. "Three jobs, Tobias. She's followed by this woman everywhere she goes. It's a liability, and she's six days in."
"She's followed by Chantal," Tobias said. "That's different."
"It's not different to a client."
"It is to me."
The partner lifted a pen and set it down.
"I hold twenty percent of this studio, and I have a vote on the conduct policy."
"You have a vote on money," Tobias said. "You don't have one on who I hire. I hired her because she drew a sealed bottle lid that fifteen designers couldn't, and nothing in that video changes the lid."
