Chapter 8: The Dealership

I walked into Ahlgren Studio at 8:58 on Thursday with Tobias's cedar soap still on my skin.

The whole floor looked up.

Everyone had seen the photo.

The finance partner stood by the printer with his arms crossed, and I could practically see the objection letter forming on his face.

Tobias walked in behind me and stopped at the staircase.

"Half a minute," he said. "I'll say it once."

"I'll say it," I said.

He looked at me, and I saw him decide to let me.

I turned to thirty-one faces.

"The photo is real," I said. "I went home with Tobias last night. We're together."

Nobody breathed.

"My offer letter is dated six weeks ago. He didn't know my face until I stood in the lobby. He hired my portfolio, and you can check the date on the email."

A man at the back whistled softly.

"If anyone has a problem with me or my work, say it to me, not to a stranger on the internet."

The woman with the green streak in her hair began to clap.

Two more joined her, and then the whole floor, loudly.

The finance partner left the room with his chin tucked in.

Tobias stood very still beside me, with a quiet, stunned look I wanted to remember.
