Chapter 15: Cinzia's Wrist
I opened the door, and my little sister stood in the hall in a gray sweatshirt with her cast held against her chest.
She was white to the lips, and she did not cry.
"Tell me now," I said.
"If I say it twice, I'll never be able to say it at the gate."
"Cinzia."
"I want them all to hear it at once," she said. "Fabiano, his men, ours, and Papa."
Adriano came up behind me, buttoning his shirt.
Cinzia looked at him, straight.
"Will you let me stand out there?"
"With forty men around you," he said. "Yes."
"Then I'm going to bed. Wake me at seven."
She went down the hall with her shoulders squared, and I leaned on the doorframe and shook.
Adriano turned me around and held my face.
"Our captains are coming in from Cleveland all night," he said. "The gate is safe until dawn."
"I can't sleep."
"Neither can I."
The deck behind the lake house faced the water.
At three in the morning it was black and freezing, with a thousand stars and a long iron daybed under a heavy wool blanket.
