Chapter 18: Held
Osvaldo went below to make his calls and left me on the stern bench with a man holding a rifle across his knees.
Osvaldo's son stood at the wheel.
I watched the back of his neck for ten minutes, and he never turned.
"You walked over to the captains at the table," I said.
His shoulders moved.
"I saw your face when the doctor spoke," I said. "You said Papa, like a boy."
"Don't."
"You heard the doctor, and you still stood at the wheel."
"He said no one would be hurt," the son said, to the windshield.
"He told the doctor it was only paper, and no one would be hurt."
His hands tightened on the wheel until the knuckles went white.
"What did he promise you?" I asked. "Cleveland?"
"My name on the seat."
"On top of a lie that took eleven years from your cousin, with every captain on that wall remembering how you got it."
"He did it for me."
"He did it to you," I said. "You were the reason he lied. You were thirty years old at that table, and you didn't know."
