Chapter 13: Paulie's Table
Angelo was down the stairs before I got my jeans on.
By the time I reached the street, he was standing in the smoke with a fire extinguisher from the gym, emptying it through the blown windshield.
It didn't matter.
The seats were already black.
My stethoscope was a curled-up wire on what used to be the passenger side.
The fire truck came eight minutes later.
A firefighter with a gray mustache walked around the car once and sniffed the air.
"Somebody poured something on the driver's seat," he said. "Gas, probably. You piss somebody off, miss?"
"A few people."
He looked up at the sign over the gym.
He read the name on it.
He didn't ask anything else.
A police officer wrote a report on the hood of his cruiser.
He didn't ask me to spell anything.
The fighters started showing up at nine for the morning class.
The welterweight came first, still in his mail carrier's shorts.
He stopped dead on the sidewalk and looked at the car, and then at me in Angelo's hoodie with my hair everywhere.
"Oh," he said. "Oh, okay. Good morning."
"Don't," I said.
"I didn't say anything."
"You said 'oh' twice."
The big heavyweight brought me coffee and a muffin and stood beside me while I ate it.
Angelo came back from the cruiser with soot on his forearms.
"That's Paulie saying good morning," he said quietly. "He wants me over there. He wants me to walk into his place and break something, in front of his guys, so they all see I'm the same as him."
"Then you don't go," I said.
"Good."
"I go."
He turned around slowly.
