Chapter 23: The Union Hall
The inspector taped a sheet to the gym door.
CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE CITY.
"I own this building," Angelo said. "My brother left it to me."
"Take it up with the review board, Mr. Corso. After the holidays."
One of the officers took out his phone and walked a few steps away.
"Who do you think the cops call first?" Angelo said quietly.
They gave us ten minutes.
I took my duffel, my textbooks and the green ledger.
On my way past the bench I took the navy jacket too.
I didn't want my father's number locked in the dark with nobody.
The big heavyweight carried my mother down the narrow stairs.
"My mom's got a pullout," he said.
His mother's rowhouse was on a skinny street off Ritner, with a plastic Santa on the stoop and plastic covers on the couch.
She was a tiny woman in a housecoat who came up to his elbow.
She looked at my mother's face for one second.
Then she took her by both hands and walked her into the kitchen and put the kettle on.
"Who did this to you?"
