Chapter 6: Beige

I didn't buy a dress.

I wore the beige one.

The church was full by eleven on Saturday morning, the twenty-fifth of October.

Captains in dark suits filled the left side, their wives in fur.

Their bodyguards stood along the back wall with their hands folded in front of them.

Domenic stood at the altar in a gray morning coat that hung off him.

Nobody in that church knew why but Angelo and me.

Angelo stood beside him as best man.

Paulie had wanted it.

Domenic had said no in front of the whole family, and Paulie had smiled and smiled.

My mother came down the aisle in ivory silk with the hem I'd last seen full of pins.

Corrine walked ahead of her in pale blue, the gold C swinging on her wrist.

She caught my eye as she passed my pew and winked.

The vows took four minutes.

When the priest said "husband and wife," Angelo looked at me over his brother's shoulder.

He was my step-uncle now.

The reception was under a white tent on the Gladwyne lawn, with heaters in every corner and a twelve-piece band.

The photographer lined us up on the stone steps.

Then he looked at my dress and moved me to the far end, next to a potted cypress.

I ended up half in the hedge.

Corrine laughed so hard she had to fix her lashes.

At dinner she stood up with a champagne flute and a microphone.

"I want to say something about my baby sister," she said sweetly. "Riley's been so devoted lately. Moved right into the house. Up all night with a man in his sixties."

The tent rippled with laughter.

"Finally, a man who keeps her up all night," Corrine said. "Too bad it's to change the sheets."

The captains roared.
