Chapter 23: The Time Lock
"Go now," Nonna said. "Before he thinks of it."
The door opened and Vin came in with a paper cup in each hand.
Aoife was behind him with a third, looking smug.
"Decaf," she said. "He tried to bribe a nurse for the real thing."
Nonna sniffed her cup and gave him a look that could strip paint.
"Tell him," she said to Mickey.
So Mickey told him, beside her bed, in a whisper.
Vin set his cup on the windowsill without drinking it.
"He walked out of here twenty minutes ago," he said.
"And he grew up in that house," Mickey said. "He knows which nightstand."
They left Aoife holding Nonna's good hand and ran for the car.
The house was eight minutes away. The driver made it in five.
On Thatcher Avenue a long silver Mercedes passed them going the other way.
The front door of the house was standing open.
Nonna's room was at the top of the stairs.
Every drawer was pulled out. Her cardigans were on the floor.
The prayer book lay open on the rug, face down, its spine cracked.
