Chapter 27: Moonrise
Vin pushed Mickey behind him.
"Let him go," he said. "He walks out. You keep me."
"I don't want you, Vincenzo." Pietro tucked his gloves in his pocket. "I want you somewhere else at moonrise."
The man with the scar went through Mickey's pockets and found his picks and held them up, grinning.
He didn't find the little brass key on its string under Mickey's sweater.
Nobody looks for a key that doesn't open anything.
They walked the two of them down the warehouse to a steel door with frost on the handle.
An old walk-in cold room, dark, empty shelves, the cooling off.
"My mother will hear you two ran off together," Pietro said. "The Table will hear the heir didn't come."
"And the baby?" Mickey said.
Pietro smiled at him.
"Babies come, son. I'll be there when he does."
The door shut.
Mickey heard the bar drop across it outside, a padlock snap, and a car leave.
Vin slid down the shelves to the floor.
Mickey sat down beside him and pressed his face into Vin's shoulder and shook.
Not from the cold.
