Chapter 13: The Lake
The muzzle pressed cold through my shirt, right over my heart.
Rafe did not move.
I don't think he breathed.
"Do it," I said again.
"No."
"He wrote it for you."
"He wrote a lot of things for me in this room."
He turned his hand under mine.
He lifted the gun off my chest, slowly.
Out in the hall, a Brandolini man said, "I'm checking that door again."
Rafe folded the page along its creases and pushed it into my back pocket.
He shut the safe and spun the dial.
He hung my mother's portrait on its hook with one hand and held the gun in the other.
The handle of the study door rattled.
"Is that the Don's good coffee?" Marisa's voice called from the kitchen.
"Those beans cost forty dollars a pound. Put it down."
The footsteps turned and went away.
Rafe took my hand and we went out through the study window into the garden.
We crossed the wet grass to the open gate and the alley, and neither of us said a word until the car was moving.
He drove east.
He drove with his bad arm, and I watched blood come through the bandage and didn't say a thing about it.
At two in the morning Oak Street Beach was empty.
The lake lay black and flat under the streetlights, and the wind off it smelled of cold iron.
