Chapter 23: Winter Break
The apartment door was unlocked, exactly as term nine said.
Snow had been falling since noon, and the yellow house stood silent in the dark, with both roommates gone home for break.
I came up the stairs with my overnight bag and my heart hammering in my throat.
I was twenty years old, and I had never walked toward anything so slowly on purpose.
Every lamp in the living room was on.
Rhett stood in the middle of the room in a black T-shirt and jeans, barefoot, with his hands hanging at his sides.
He was twenty-two, six foot two, and a captain with a pink scar through his left eyebrow.
He looked at me.
"Lights on," he said, hoarse.
"Lights on."
"Door unlocked."
"I noticed."
"Nothing hidden."
I put my bag on the floor.
"Say what you want," he said. "Out loud. All of it."
My face went hot, and I made myself keep looking at him.
"I want you to take my clothes off slowly," I said. "I want to watch you look at me while you do it."
His breath went out of him.
He crossed the room and stopped an inch away.
His hands found the hem of my sweater and lifted it, over my head, and let it drop.
He looked.
He took his time, his eyes moving from my face to my collarbone to the plain black bra and the soft curve of my stomach.
"Mine," he said.
"Yours."
He unhooked the bra and slid it down my arms.
His palms came up and covered my breasts, rough and warm, and my nipples hardened against them.
"More," I said.
He bent and took one in his mouth.
His tongue circled it, slow, and then he sucked, and I grabbed his hair with both hands.
