Chapter 13: First Shift

Nobody in the hall moved for five full seconds.

Then Kellan took my hand in front of two hundred and forty people and walked me up the aisle.

The crowd opened for us.

Not one of them spoke until we were out the doors and down the steps into the cold night.

Mabel stood at the bottom with her cane planted in the gravel.

"Take her up the ridge," she said.

"Aunt Mabel, it's midnight."

"Her wolf has been scratching at the door since Monday. It heard her in there tonight, and it will not wait for a better hour."

I opened my mouth to say I felt fine.

Every bone in my back gave one long creak, and I shut it again.

"Go," Mabel said. "I'll tell Dot you're safe. She'll say she already knew."

Kellan drove up the logging road with one hand on the wheel and the other wrapped around mine.

The moon was a thin white rind over the pines.

"My heat is over," I said. "So what is this?"

"It's you waking up the rest of the way."

"Does it hurt?"

"Yes," he said. "Then it doesn't."

He parked in the clearing above the cabin.

The grass was knee high and silver, and the whole ridge smelled of pine and cold water.

I got out and stood there shaking.
