Chapter 6: Everyone Kneels
Mabel MacAskill held her pack supper on the porch every Sunday of the summer, and nobody had ever been excused from it.
Not even me.
Not even on the second night of the Courting, with Marlee ignoring my texts and my skin humming.
"Wear a dress," Mom said. "Eat the corn. Don't start a fight."
"I never start fights."
"You started one in the second grade over a pudding cup."
"She was stealing it."
"And I'm proud of you. But tonight, no pudding."
Mabel's house sat at the top of the hill above the creek.
It was a long white farmhouse with a wraparound porch and forty folding chairs, and by seven o'clock the whole pack was there.
Children ran through the grass.
Two old men argued over a grill.
Mabel herself held court from a rocking chair at the end of the porch, sixty-eight years old, with a white braid down to her hip and a cane across her knees that she never once leaned on.
"Everly Dunne," she said, and looked me over with eyes just like Kellan's. "Come here, girl."
I went.
She sniffed me delicately.
"Mm," she said. "Well."
"Ma'am?"
"Nothing. Go eat."
Kellan was already there, standing at the far end of the porch with a beer he hadn't touched.
I felt it the second I came up the steps.
The air changed.
Every hair on my arms lifted.
He looked at me once, quickly, and away.
His face was the color of old paper and there were dark smudges under his eyes.
He had a fine sweat on his temple, though the evening was cool.
I went to the long table and filled a plate and didn't look at him again, and the whole time I was aware of him.
I had barely sat down with my corn when Ridley came up the steps.
