Chapter 17: The Hearing
At eight-fifty the next morning I stood outside a conference room on the fourth floor of the medical school in my one good blazer.
Gemma stood beside me in hers. She'd signed on as my support person the day the first notice came.
"You're allowed one," she'd said. "I'm the one."
Tate sat on a bench across the hall with his arm strapped to his chest in a black sling and pillow.
They hadn't let him in.
"Closed hearing," the committee secretary had said. "Student, support person, complainant, witnesses."
"I'm the patient," Tate said.
"Then you're the subject, Mr. Haverly. Not a witness."
So he sat on the bench, six days out of surgery, gray in the face, because I'd told him not to come and he'd come anyway.
"If anybody needs a chart read out loud," he said, "I'm right here."
The door opened at nine.
Five people sat on the far side of the table.
And in the middle, the chair.
She was the woman attending from the second row at grand rounds. The one who'd been writing on the back of her program.
