Chapter 23: Recovery Time

I didn't hit him.

I thought about it with my whole arm.

One of the moms had her phone up. The man with the cane had folded his newspaper on his knee.

"Have a good day, Dr. Dunne," I said, loud enough for every chair. "Your patients should ask who's treating them."

I walked out through the glass doors.

I made it to my car before my hands went.

I sat there with both of them on the wheel until they stopped.

Then I drove back to the physical therapy lot and parked in the same spot, four minutes before Tate came out.

He got in sweaty and gray, his sling twisted.

"Boring errand?"

"Very."

"Your eyes are red."

"It's windy."

He looked out at the parking lot, where a flag hung dead still on its pole.

He didn't say anything.

I drove him home to Bay View with Dunne's words in my mouth the whole way.

I didn't let them out.

He was seventeen days out of surgery. He slept sitting up. He woke at three most nights and stared at the ceiling.

I knew what he stared at.

I told myself Dunne was a liar, and liars don't get to sit in your head at three in the morning.
