Chapter 27: The Dean

I read it out loud to the ceiling.

Tate opened one eye.

"Ten?"

"Ten."

"Terms," he said into the pillow. "Your career is yours. So tell me what you need."

I looked at him.

"You," I said. "In a suit. Sitting where they can see you."

He opened the other eye.

"Done."

I had three and a half hours.

I drove to Bay View and dug under my bed for the plastic tub I hadn't opened since I left the ambulance.

Four years of my old patient care reports, copied for my med school application and never thrown out.

Gemma sat on the floor beside me in her robe and helped me find what I needed.

Then I called the clinic coordinator.

"Can you send me my clerkship assignment sheet? The real one. Every patient I was given."

"Honey," she said. "You weren't given any."

"I know. I need it on paper."

She emailed it in four minutes.

Then I called the goalie.

He called the captain. The captain called the two young guys.

By nine-thirty I had five signed statements on my phone, and the goalie had added a line under his.

Go get them, doc.

The dean's suite was on the top floor of the medical school, with carpet so thick my shoes went quiet.
