Chapter 4: Zero

I found him after practice in his truck at the far end of the lot, engine running, heat on high.

He hadn't skated. He'd watched from the bench in a team hoodie with his arm across his chest.

I climbed into the passenger seat and handed him my phone.

He read it with his thumb moving slowly down the screen.

"I don't know what any of this means," he said.

"This one's the testosterone. It's high because they're putting it in."

"Okay."

"These two are your brain telling your body to make its own. They're gone."

"Gone like low?"

"Gone like the lab couldn't find them."

He looked at the windshield.

Snow was coming down slow over the practice rink.

"So the sperm thing," he said.

"I can't tell you a count from this. But with these numbers, I'd bet it's at zero or close."

He nodded.

He kept nodding, a small motion.

Then he turned the heat down.

"You know the backyard rink," he said.

"The one you flood every December and swear at."

"I swear at the hose. Not the rink." He almost smiled. "First year I did it, the twins were four. My sister fell eleven times and wouldn't let me hold her up."

"I remember. She bit you."

"She bit me." He rubbed his thumb over the steering wheel. "Every year I stand out there at night with the hose, and I think, one day it's mine. My kid. Somebody falls eleven times and I'm the one they're mad at."

I didn't say anything.

I don't think I could have.

"I never told anybody that," he said. "Sounds stupid out loud."

"It doesn't."

He looked at me then. His eyes were wet and furious.

I put my hands on either side of his face before I thought about it.

"Hey. It can come back. It often does. You stop, you give it time, you get help if it needs help."
