Chapter 8: Five of Us

"Five," I said.

"Me. Haverly. The captain. Two of the younger guys." The goalie leaned on his SUV. "All in contract years. All on Dunne's protocol. All mild."

"Who else knows?"

"Everybody knows the shots. Nobody knew about the..." He waved a hand at his own belt. "Haverly told me last night. Said you explained it so even a goalie could understand."

"Did he use those words?"

"He used worse ones."

I looked at the box in his hand.

"I need to see all five charts. Your real ones. Whatever Dunne gives you."

"Where?"

I thought about the training facility, with its glass walls and its cameras.

"My place," I said. "Bay View. Tomorrow at seven. My roommate makes chili."

The next night four men over six feet tall stood in our second-floor flat, ducking the kitchen light.

Gemma looked up at them from the stove in her KISS THE COOK apron.

"Shoes off," she said. "I just mopped."

Four professional hockey players took their shoes off in a row by the door.

The captain was thirty-five, with a knee brace under his jeans and gray at his temples. He handed Gemma a bottle of wine.

"Thank you, ma'am."

"Don't ma'am me. Sit."

The two younger guys were twenty-four and twenty-six, one a winger with a taped ankle, one a defenseman who walked like his back hurt.

Tate came in last with a bag of bakery bread under his good arm.

Gemma took it from him and looked at his forearm for a long, frank second.

"Hm," she said.

"What?"

"Nothing. TV doesn't lie."

He looked at me. I shook my head. Don't ask.

We ate at the table, the coffee table and the arm of the couch.

The radiator knocked.
