Chapter 14: The Borrowed Coat
Silvan Ravenscroft had not told his grandmother what he remembered.
He knew exactly what she would do with it.
She would take her rosary and her lawyers to Anselm Dray's front door and ruin the only chance they had of making it stick.
So he waited until Linnet was asleep, took her old phone off the dresser, and put on a coat that belonged to the driver.
It hung loose on his shoulders and smelled of cigarettes.
"You should not be out," the driver said, holding the car door.
"Then drive slowly," Silvan said.
Anselm's flat was on the fourth floor of a pale stone building near the bank.
Silvan took the stairs one at a time, with the cane doing half the work and his ribs doing the complaining.
On the landing he stopped, because the door was not quite shut.
Light came through the gap, and with it came a man's voice, pleased and soft.
"Stop crying, Pip. You'll ruin your face."
"My father won't take my calls," Philippa said. Her voice was thick. "He took my card. He took the car."
"Your father is angry. He'll be sorry when we're married."
"We can't be married. Half the city has heard that tape."
"Half the city has heard a recording," Anselm said. "Soon they'll watch me kiss you in front of four hundred people, and they'll forget it."
Silvan laid the phone against the doorframe and pressed record.
"Soon," Philippa said. "And then what?"
"Then we finish it, in front of everyone. Linnet will come, because she can't help herself. She'll stand in the back in her widow's black, and I'll say a few kind words about her poor mother."
