Chapter 20: Drive Safe, Sil
Linnet stood on the lawn with her hand in Silvan's and listened to Anselm Dray confess to murder.
"I cut the line myself," said the voice from the speakers, warm and fond. "A new blade, behind the front wheel."
Four hundred guests sat without moving.
"It was the best work I ever did," the voice said. "Four minutes down the road, and the bridge did the rest."
A woman in the third row put both hands over her mouth.
On the arch, Anselm's smile had cracked down the middle.
"Turn it off," he said.
Nobody moved.
"Turn it off!"
"He's at the bottom of the river," the recording said, "and he cannot tell anyone anything."
Anselm swung toward the sound table, where a man in a headset was sitting very still.
"That is a forgery," he shouted. "That is an old woman's trick. You all know what she is."
"We know what you are," a man called from the back.
Anselm spun around.
His face was white, and his hands shook at his sides.
"That is not a recording of me," he said, to the lawn. "That is a stranger in a dead man's coat, with a stolen name, and a girl who has been crazy since the day she married a photograph."
He pointed at Silvan.
"Look at him! Where is his proof? Where is his body?"
"Right here," Silvan said.
He let go of Linnet's hand and walked forward alone.
The cane tapped on the stone path, and every head turned with him.
He stopped in front of the arch, ten feet from Anselm, and pulled back his coat.
On his lapel, in the sun, shone a small silver oak leaf.
