Chapter 10: Not Your Commander

His apartment was on the second floor of a brick building off Raeford Road, and it looked like nobody lived there.

One couch, one lamp, one shelf of flight manuals, and a bed visible through the open bedroom door.

He shut the front door behind us and stood with his back against it.

"I'm under inquiry," Jonas said. "You're under a stranger's chain of command. Neither of us is supposed to be in this room."

"I know."

"I'm telling you that so you can leave."

"I'm not going to leave."

"Say it again."

"I want you, Jonas. I've wanted you since the hangar. I'm so tired of wanting you in a car."

He moved before I finished the sentence.

His hands closed on my face.

He kissed me against the door hard enough to knock my head back, his mouth hot, his tongue deep.

I dragged his shirt out of his waistband and got my palms flat against his bare stomach.

He shuddered.

"Bedroom," he said into my mouth.

"Carry me."

He did.

He lifted me by the backs of my thighs, and I wrapped my legs around his hips.

I bit his neck all the way through the dark apartment, and he dropped me on the bed.

The mattress bounced.

He stood over me and pulled his shirt over his head in one motion.

He had a soldier's body, lean and hard.

The scar ran up his left arm and across his shoulder.

I sat up and put my mouth on it.

He went still.

"I can't feel that," he said hoarsely.

"Tell me when you can."

I kissed along the ridge of old skin, slowly, up toward his collarbone.

His breath caught.

His hand slid into my braid and tightened.

"Sadie."

"Is that something?"

"Yes. Christ, yes."

He pushed me back onto the bed and pulled my shirt off, then my bra, and his eyes went over me.

"You're beautiful," he said. "I have been trying not to know that."
