Chapter 19: Boyd

"Tell me where," I said into the phone, already pulling on my boots.

"Wolves' Den," said Boyd. "Raeford Road. Don't be early. I want a drink first."

"You are on crutches."

"I'm a pioneer."

The bar was a low cinderblock room with a pool table, a jukebox and a ceiling hung with unit patches.

Nine men sat around two pushed-together tables in the back, loud and sunburned, with a pitcher of beer in the center.

Colby was at the head of the table with his dress jacket over a chair and his sleeves rolled up.

He was telling the story of the pad that morning.

"She's lost it," he said. "Stood there on a Colonel's flight line and called me a coward. I felt sorry for her."

"I'd have felt worse for the Colonel," said a young sergeant, grinning.

Then the door banged and Boyd came through it on two crutches.

His left leg was bound in a brace from the hip to the ankle, and there was a hospital band still on his wrist.

I walked in beside him and Jonas came in behind us, in civilian clothes, and stopped by the jukebox.

The table went quiet.

"Boyd!" The big weapons sergeant half stood. "Look at this guy. Sit down, you stupid bastard."
