Chapter 23: Ninety Days
At nine o'clock that night he laid the sheet of paper on the kitchen table.
It was the same one, folded in four and gone soft at the creases.
His small neat letters ran down it, and under them mine, and the two signatures at the bottom.
"Ninety days," Ronan said. "This was the term."
"I remember."
"Today it's over."
"Orla signed it herself, and the table witnessed it."
"Go home tonight and sleep in your own bed."
He tried to smile, and it did not take.
"You can pack, and my driver will take you home tonight. Or tomorrow, or never, and I will not stop you."
"Never?"
"It's your door." He looked at it down the hall. "I never should have made it mine."
I sat down across the table and did not touch the paper.
The kitchen was quiet.
The tap dripped, and the radiator knocked, and the glass he had shoved off the counter the night he sat me on it had long since been swept away.
"You're serious," I said.
"I've never been more serious."
"You'd let me walk out of here, and you wouldn't follow, and you wouldn't send anyone."
