Chapter 22: Haskins Falls
On the third Saturday in October, Nelson held a rally in a hay barn in Tama County.
Four hundred people stood on straw bales and plank floors, in coats and seed caps and one tiny Halloween cow costume.
Hallie ran the door with her laminated map under her arm.
She had picked the barn herself.
"Two exits, one loft, and the cousin of a cousin who owns the sound system," she said.
"Hallie, you know everybody in this state."
"I know everybody's cousin."
Nelson stood on a flatbed trailer at the far end, with a microphone on a stand.
I stood to his left, next to a farm wife in an apron who kept handing me cookies.
Halfway through his speech, a boy of about nine tugged my sleeve.
"Miss," he said. "There's a man in the loft."
"Lots of people are in the loft, sweetie."
"He's not clapping, and he has a wire."
I looked up.
At the top of a hay ladder, behind a bale, a man in a grey polo had a long microphone pointed at the flatbed.
A lanyard hung out from under the shirt, and it said HASKINS FOR SENATE.
