Chapter 20: The Voice
The recording ran on through the ceiling speakers for four minutes, and no one at the long table moved.
I had heard it once from a dark street.
The board was hearing it with the lights on, and the twelve faces at the table were all turned toward the head of it.
Gordon's smile had stayed, but it had stopped meaning anything.
The lawyer touched the drive, and a second file opened.
It was the same voice, only softer, taken from a driver's phone at the lake.
It told the driver to keep going.
I heard a woman on the right side of the table draw in a breath.
I heard the man in the blue tie, who had seconded the motion, swallow.
The recording ended.
The air conditioning ran for five full seconds.
"That is fabricated," Gordon said.
His voice was perfectly level.
"A sophomore with software can build a voice from a few speeches."
"I am astonished that this board would sit still for it."
