I looked at Faye for a long time.

I had known that face since the seventh grade, when she'd traded me half a bologna sandwich for the answer to a fractions quiz.

I knew every way it could lie.

This was not one of them.

"The baby didn't do anything," I said.

Faye flinched.

"I'm not going to hurt a child to get at you. Or at him."

"So you'll stay quiet," Preston said, too quickly.

"No."

His face fell.

"I won't call any reporter about you. That's not for Cecily, and it's not for you. It's because I'm finished with the whole thing."

"I also won't sign her statement, or read her lines, or tell anyone the clip was edited."

"It wasn't."

I turned to Faye.

"You want a way out, you'll have to find one yourself. I'm not your rescue, and I'm not your punishment."

"I'm done being either one."

Faye's eyes filled, but she nodded once, very small.

"A June wedding," Preston said to her, slowly, as if he were reading the words off a wall. "When did she say June?"
