Chapter 24: What Faye Wanted

I did not let her in.

I stepped out onto the porch in Bram's sweater with the door pulled shut behind me and the boards cold under my bare feet.

The harbor was the color of dishwater, and a single gull stood on a piling and judged us both.

"You've got five minutes," I said.

"That's all I need."

Faye sat down on the top step.

She did not look like a woman who had walked into a church to take something.

She looked like a girl in a rain jacket who had not slept.

"I'm not here to ask for anything," she said. "I'm not here for the baby, or Preston, or your silence."

"Then why?"

"Because you never got to ask me why, and I never said."

In the corridor, and at the showcase, and at the altar, I had never once asked her.

I had been too busy being right.

"Seventh grade," Faye said, to the water. "In homeroom, I traded you half a sandwich for the fractions quiz. It was my whole lunch."

"I remember."

"You ate it and never asked. I loved you for that, and I hated you for it, the same afternoon."

"Why?"

"Because you never noticed. You had a father who waited outside school with a thermos, and it never crossed your mind that I had no lunch."
