Chapter 30: The Question
"Stand up," I said. "You'll ruin your knee."
"Not yet."
"Bram."
"I told you. Let me say all of it."
I closed my mouth.
Down the corridor an usher dropped a stack of programs, and somebody hushed him.
Bram let go of my hand with great care.
He reached inside his black jacket and drew out a long cream envelope, creased from months of living in a pocket.
I knew it before it left his fingers.
The petition.
His signature stood on the last page in bold black ink, below a date from the spring.
"I'm not asking you to marry me," he said.
"You already did that on a Tuesday in Reno, in front of a minister who said 'close enough' about the vows."
"I'm not asking you to forgive me, either. I've watched you not do it for months, and you do it better than anyone I know."
"I'm asking one thing."
He held the envelope up between us.
"Do you want to stay married?"
My throat closed.
"If the answer is no," Bram said, steadily, "this goes in the mail on Monday. I'll sign anything else. I'll be at your wedding to whoever you like with a gift and a clean shirt."
