Chapter 14: Costly
The call came at eleven the next morning, while Tori and I were splitting the last piece of toast.
It was Carter's driver.
He had never called me before.
"Miss Swire," he said.
"He told me not to tell you."
I put the toast down.
"At two this morning he woke his lawyer."
"By six, he had signed the terminal over to a fund for Nico's women."
"The land, the cranes, the lease, all of it."
"He did what?"
"The crew read it out at dawn."
"Forty men, and nobody left."
My chest hurt.
"Where is he now?"
"The Lantern Room."
"He went in the front door ten minutes ago, with no gun."
"The two witnesses from the table went in behind him."
"Giorgio asked for them to come."
I was already in my parka.
Tori grabbed her keys and said, "I'm driving."
"You're staying."
"The hell I am."
