Chapter 21: The Bosses
Giorgio stopped at the foot of the table and set his hand on the back of his empty chair.
"Gentlemen," he said.
"I hear you've been busy."
Nobody answered him.
He smiled at that and looked around the ring of faces, one at a time.
"A table without the man it tries," he said.
"That's not a table."
"That's a funeral."
"It is a count," said the grey witness.
"It has been taken."
"By custom you may answer once."
"Then I will."
He folded his hands.
"I buried my son this month."
"He was thirty years old."
"Some of you held him at his christening."
His voice cracked, a small human crack, and for the first time his eyes were wet.
I watched two of the bosses look away.
"A girl with a tire iron broke his head."
"Now she stands in this room with my old rival, and she plays you a dead boy's phone, and you take it for scripture."
