Chapter 17: The Key
My mother made a sound I'd never heard from her.
She took the phone out of my hand and turned it face down on her knee, like that would stop it.
"Who is this?" she said. "Joni. Who is doing this to you?"
"I don't know."
"Somebody was in your room. While you slept."
"I know, Mom."
My stepfather had stopped pretending to be asleep.
He sat up in the recliner and looked at the back of my mother's phone.
"Call the police," he said.
It was the first thing he'd ever said that was about me.
Crew was already on his feet.
"We go back tonight."
"It's midnight," my mother said.
"Then we go at five."
We left at five.
My mother stood on the porch in her robe and handed me a cooler of leftovers and held on to me too long.
Then she hugged Crew.
Then, after a second, she hugged Corey.
He stood there with his arms out.
Then he hugged her back.
Nobody spoke for the first hour.
