Jordyn looked at the book.

The lighthouse.

The pinhole.

"You told me it was the best book you ever read," I said. "I never opened it."

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The officer took the bag out of my hand and tucked it under her arm.

"Thank you, Ms. Burkett."

They walked Jordyn into the elevator.

She didn't shout anything else.

The doors closed on her gold sequins and her one earring.

Then my mother was there, pushing through people with her purse held out in front of her.

She hugged me so hard my feet left the roof.

"Okay," she kept saying into my hair. "Okay. Okay."

Over her shoulder, the editor was standing by the elevators with her phone to her ear and her coat still on.

She caught my eye.

She took the pencil out of her teeth.

"That's enough," she mouthed.

By two in the morning, @DelmontUnfiltered said, "This account is unavailable."

By Saturday noon, the Vault was gone too.

Sunday night, Saylor's house voted.

The girl in yellow who'd caught the burner on the staircase read the result out loud in the front room.
