Chapter 13: Unread
The pickup line at Polly's school wound around the block in a slow ribbon of SUVs.
I stood by the iron gate with a white bakery bag, because I had promised her a cookie.
Nathaniel's sedan pulled up at ten past three.
He got out in a gray suit with no cap, and every mother in line turned her head.
They had all seen the lawn video by now.
"Della," he said.
"Page forty."
"I can explain it."
"Then explain it."
He kept his hands at his sides, the way he had in the nurse's kitchen.
"Every July, my mother's assistant put a folder on my desk," he said. "Forty pages of grants. I signed the last one."
"You signed six checks to the man who told me my baby was dead."
"Yes."
"Don't just say yes."
"I don't have anything better."
A mother beside us pretended to look at her phone.
I stepped closer and lowered my voice, which made it worse.
"I sat in a bakery at four a.m. for six years, Nathaniel, and you were paying him."
