The Pendelton Group annual meeting was held in a hotel ballroom with six hundred chairs.
Every chair was full, and a row of cameras stood along the back wall.
I sat in the third row in my one black dress, with Dee on my left and Polly's empty seat on my right.
Polly was at school, because I would not let her near a camera.
On the stage, behind a long table, sat the board.
Eleven directors, a microphone for each, and a gap at the head where the chair's seat used to be.
Nathaniel walked up to the podium with a single sheet of paper.
He did not put it down, and he did not read from it.
"Good morning," he said. "I'll keep this short."
"I have been offered a deal."
The room shifted.
"The board has told me I may keep every title I hold if I describe what happened at the Foundation as a clerical error."
"That is the word. A clerical error."
