Chapter 24: Row Nine, Last
At nine the next morning, Row Nine at St. Brigid's was full of people in yellow.
Dee wore a rain slicker the color of a school bus.
The nurse wore a yellow cardigan, and the big guard wore a tie with lemons on it, which she had bought him.
Nathaniel wore a plain yellow shirt with the silver cufflink on his right wrist.
I wore the green dress from the night before under a yellow raincoat that no longer buttoned over my stomach.
Polly wore all of it at once, with a yellow hat pulled down over her curls.
"Positions," she said, and nobody argued.
The same two cemetery workers had come back with the same small yellow machine.
One of them took his cap off when he saw me.
"We never charged for the first job, ma'am," he said. "We're not charging for this one."
"Thank you."
"It was a bad business."
"It was," I said.
He nodded at the lamb stone.
"You want that moved?"
I walked up to it.
The lamb sat on its gray slab with moss in the grooves of its wool.
