Chapter 8: Liability

The light turned red again, and Quincy was still waiting for my answer.

I gave him the only true thing I could afford.

"I'm scared all the time," I said. "The stickers help."

He turned his head.

"Of what?"

"Of everything that's already on its way. A loose rail. A cable. A glass in the wrong hand. If I put a label on it, it's mine, and I know where it is."

"That isn't in your file."

"It wouldn't be. Nobody ever asked."

He pulled away from the light very gently.

He drove the rest of the lake road with both hands on the wheel, and he did not say anything clever, which I noticed and was grateful for.

At my grandmother's gate he parked and got out and came around the car to open my door.

"I can open a door."

"I know you can. Let me be useless."

The porch light was on, and the lake was black behind the house.

We stood on the front walk, two feet apart, with a bare tree behind him.

"Thank you for tonight," he said. "My mother has never been torn in half by a woman with a folding chair."

"She tore the paper herself. Hattie only supervised."

"I'd like to see it again."

He took a half step toward me.

I did not step back.

The distance between us was now about one foot, and I could see a small pulse at the side of his throat.
