Chapter 15: Whose Money
Vivian's thumb was over the send button when I took the phone out of her hand.
"Leo."
"No."
I turned the screen face down on the kitchen table.
It was nine at night, and all seven fires were still burning, though none had spread.
The sisters had come back one at a time, with their coats on and their faces gray.
None of them had gone to bed, because none of them would leave the house.
"That money was a gift," I said. "You don't repay a gift."
"It's a hundred thirty-eight thousand dollars, and I have it," said Vivian.
"Repay it and you've said it was a loan," said Judge from the counter, with her red shoes off.
"A loan to a person who received it. That's Carolyn's theory, in your handwriting."
"Then I give it to the Fund as a donation."
"To the Fund that Carolyn runs?" Spook said.
Vivian opened her mouth, and closed it.
"I'm not paying a debt," she said. "I'm trying to protect you all."
"I know," I said. "You're also trying to do it alone, and that's the part that makes me crazy."
