Chapter 22: The Apology

I closed the front door behind me, so my sisters wouldn't have to hear it.

The porch light turned the rain gold, and Amanda stood in it with a white envelope against her chest.

She had no pearls on.

Her hair was down and wet, and her mother's cream coat had been traded for a gray raincoat I had never seen.

"I won't come in," she said. "I'm not asking to."

"Good."

"I gave a statement to the Attorney General this afternoon. Four hours."

"I told them I knew from my second year. I didn't leave anything out."

I leaned on the porch rail and said nothing.

"My name is on Lakeside Holdings," Amanda said. "My mother made me a member, years ago, for the taxes."

"I never read the papers."

"I read them today. I signed my share to the trustee the court named for the Fund."

"The lake house?"

"My share of it. It goes to the scholarships."

It was not a small thing, and she knew it.

It was the only property she had ever owned that was worth a number.

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because you'd have found out, and I wanted you to hear it from me."
