Chapter 12: Garrick
I sent for Garrick at first light.
I didn't go to the lodge door and ask for a favour.
I sent the boy who minded the bridge across with one sentence, and I walked to the north post with Bram at my shoulder and waited on Greywater's side of the gate.
"I'll say it alone," I told Bram.
"You'll say it with me standing here."
I looked at him.
"Are you worried I'll run to him?"
"I'm worried he'll run at you," Bram said. "That's a different thing."
Garrick came down the road on foot, half an hour later.
He had not slept either.
His eyes were grey and sunken, and he stopped a long way from the gate.
"Rhea. Hester said you wanted me."
"Hester didn't say anything. I did."
I held up my hand.
In it was a plait of pale blonde hair, tied in a double knot.
"Do you know this?"
He frowned.
"It's a wristband. Lenore's colour."
"It came off the arm of the boy in the grave."
The silence was so complete that I heard a crow far up in the pines.
"What are you talking about?" Garrick said.
"I opened the grave you buried my son in."
"You dug up my son's grave?"
"Look at it."
He took it from my palm.
It trembled in his fingers.
"That doesn't mean anything," he said. "The pup was wrapped in the Wycliffe blanket. The Beta said the cold had done its work."
"The Beta said."
"Yes."
"Did you look at him?"
His mouth opened and shut.
"Did you look at the body, Garrick? Did you pull back the blanket and look at your son's face?"
