Chapter 17: The Glove

Bram's POV

I found her in the kitchen at two in the morning, with the boy at her breast and the fire down to coals.

She didn't look up.

"Garrick?" she said.

"Asleep in the bunkhouse. Sinead stitched his cheek. He'll be ugly for a month."

"Good."

I sat across the table from her, and I kept my hands flat on the wood.

I had been keeping them still around her for a week.

It was the hardest thing I'd done as Alpha.

"You've never asked me a thing," Rhea said.

"About what?"

"About why you took in a stranger bleeding on the ice. Why you never handed me back. Everyone else asked, and you didn't."

"I knew why."

She lifted her head.

Her grey-green eyes were tired, and very steady.

"Then say it."

I had wanted to say it for five years.

"I saw you when you were nineteen," I said.

She said nothing.

"The winter truce. Ironbark came across the bridge with Edric at the front. You were at the back, in a red wool scarf, with your braid down your coat. You'd lost a glove, and it was lying on the ice, and no one else noticed."

"I don't remember that."

"I picked it up. I was going to hand it to you." My mouth was dry. "And my wolf stood up in my chest and said: Mine."

The fire popped.

The baby shifted against her, and she put her palm on his back without looking.

"I was twenty-seven," I said. "You were promised to Garrick Wycliffe by your father and his. The families had signed. You were nineteen, and you'd never been out of Ironbark, and you walked past me with your chin up and never looked."
