Chapter 4: The Lycan Alpha

I tried to get up and my arms folded under me.

"I said don't move."

The boots came around my head, and a man knelt in the dust.

He was the biggest person I had ever seen.

His shoulders blocked out the ridge, and there was silver in his black hair above the ears.

A scar split his left eyebrow in two.

His eyes were a cold blue-grey, and they went to the mark on my neck and stayed there.

His whole body went still.

"Who did that to you?" he said.

"Go away."

"Who."

"The king."

A muscle jumped in his jaw.

"The fever will kill you before dark," he said. "Rejected wolves are supposed to be carried to their own packs."

"My pack stood there and watched."

He said nothing to that.

He took off his glove and laid his bare palm over the mark.

I hissed through my teeth.

Then the burning drained out of me, all at once, from my neck down to my fingers.

Rue gave a long, shaking sigh.

She pushed forward against my ribs, toward him, and I felt her tail thump against the inside of me.

"What are you doing to her?" I said.

"I'm not doing anything."

"She likes you."

"Wolves lean toward warmth."

"I'm not weak."

"I know," he said. "First overall."

I stared at him.

"Everyone knows your name this morning," he said, and he lifted me into his arms.

I should have hit him.
