Chapter 11: Two Tickets

I waited until the car door shut and the driver pulled out into the traffic.

"When did you sign for Singapore?"

Angelo stared at the back of the front seat.

"February."

"February."

"The second week." He rubbed his thumb along his jaw. "I took the posting because I wanted to take you with me."

I turned in the seat.

"Me?"

"Two years. The hotel there needed someone to open it properly. I had two tickets booked for the Saturday."

"The Saturday after that Friday."

"I was going to put them in your hands at dinner." His voice was rough. "I'd booked Ponte."

I had planned a dinner that Friday too.

I had a bottle of sparkling juice in the pantry and two lines on a test.

I couldn't speak.

"Noelle booked the whole trip," he said. "She made the arrangements for both of us, and she asked me twice if I was sure about taking you. She said you'd hate being far from your friends."

"She said that."

"She said it very kindly."

Something cold slid down my spine and settled.

"The night you found the room," I said slowly, "Noelle knew you were about to take me away."

"Yes."

"And I'd be gone for two years."

"Yes."

"And she wanted you there by yourself."

He closed his eyes.

"Take me home," I said, to the driver, and Angelo opened his eyes and looked at me.

"I'm not leaving you tonight," he said. "Not for one hour."

"Good."

The house was dark when we got back.

He turned the lock twice behind us, and then he stood in the front hall with his back against the green door and his tie hanging loose.
