Chapter 28: Sunday One
We found Tomas sitting on the floor of room 1412 with his back against the minibar.
He had his arms folded and a cup of hotel tea at his knee.
"Hi," he said. "I'm guarding it."
Dessa came through the door behind us in her scrubs, straight off the night shift.
She hit him on the shoulder with her bag.
"Your sponsor called me! At seven! I thought you were dead in a ditch!"
"Mama told me to leave my phone in the basket before she went out," Tomas said.
"So I did. Then I sat here to keep an eye on the bar."
"That's the most sensible thing you've ever done," Angelo said.
"It's a test. I'm passing it."
Dessa sat down on the carpet next to him and put her forehead on his arm.
"Never again," she said into his sleeve.
"Okay."
"I mean it."
"Okay, Dess."
Angelo looked at the two of them, and then at me.
I saw him decide not to say one word about it.
At six o'clock we rode the elevator up together.
