Chapter 40: What I Said
"It was three weeks after the divorce," Angelo said to the ceiling. "I was twenty-four."
I turned on my side so I could see his face.
"My father had made me a vice president of nothing, and Noelle had just been hired on the sixth floor.
"She was twenty-one. She was the only one who laughed at my jokes."
"That sounds like her."
"My mother had phoned the house twice that week, and the housekeeper kept bringing me the message.
"I was angry, and I hadn't slept. I was standing in the hall outside my office with a stack of pink notes."
He stopped.
"I gave them to Noelle," he said. "I said, 'If anything comes from my mother, don't bring it to me.'"
The house made its small night sounds around us.
I didn't say anything.
"I meant the phone," he said. "I meant the messages. I meant I didn't want to hear that voice for a while."
"You didn't mean the mail."
"I didn't think of the mail. I didn't think of anything. I said one sentence in a hallway, and I never said another word on the subject for ten years."
