Chapter 42: Twelve Weeks

Tala's POV

The gel was cold, and the room on the third floor of the clinic had too many chairs in it.

I had asked for everyone.

Noelle's mother had asked me for one hour on Saturday, and I hadn't answered her yet.

Lourdes had said the prison could wait until I had seen my baby.

Angelo sat at my left with my hand in both of his.

Dessa had come straight off her night shift with her hair in a clip.

Tomas stood behind her with one hand on the back of her neck.

Lourdes had taken the corner chair by the window.

She held her handbag on her knees and sat very straight.

The doctor with the reading glasses pushed up in her gray hair moved the wand low across my stomach.

"Twelve weeks and one day," she said. "Let's see who's home."

The screen flickered gray.

Then a small shape slid into the middle of it, with a round head and two tiny curled arms.

It kicked.

It kicked again, hard.

"There," said the doctor. "Do you see the leg?"

Nobody answered her.

Angelo made a sound I knew by now, and his forehead came down on my knuckles.

Tomas said, "Holy shit," and Dessa hit him in the ribs.

Lourdes had got to her feet without anyone seeing her do it.

She stood at the foot of the bed with her hand over her mouth and her eyes on the screen.

"And the bleed?" I said.
