Chapter 46: A Church Two Blocks Away
Angelo's POV
The church was two blocks from the house, a gray stone building with a bell that rang on the hour.
Its side door was never locked.
I went there at ten on Saturday night because I couldn't sit in the house.
Tala was asleep upstairs with her hand on her stomach, and the priest had left a lamp burning by the altar.
The nave smelled of candle wax and floor polish.
The first pew on the left had a woman in it.
She sat very straight in a black dress with her rosary in her lap.
She did not turn around when my shoes sounded on the stone.
"Mama."
"You are not supposed to be here," she said. "It is bad luck to see the church before the wedding."
"It's a renewal."
"It is a wedding," said Lourdes. "Sit down."
I sat down beside her.
For a while neither of us said anything.
The lamp threw our shadows up the wall, two long dark shapes on the plaster.
"You asked me in April why I left," she said at last. "I told you about the lawyers and the window and the shares. All of it was true."
